Honor Distinguished Alumnae Emily Bittenbender ’89, Gail Bracegirdle ’65 and Gail Gaines 2:45 pm – 3:30pm “HOW TO LEARN FROM (BUT MOSTLY IGNORE) REJECTION” Amy Ignatow ’02 was a struggling artist and became a published author through talent, hard work, and the inability to listen when the world was saying “Hey, maybe your friend Diedre can get you a job as an administrative assistant.” Ignatow will talk about how she made her artistic aspirations a reality, ignoring the naysayers that tell you a life of art-making can’t be lucrative or sustainable. Ignatow is the author of the New York Times-reviewed The Popularity Papers. She writes and illustrates the series to 8-to-13 year-old readers. The fifth book of the series, The Popularity Papers 5: The Awesomely Aweful Melodies of Lydia Goldblott and Julia Graham-Chang, will be released in March 2013. 3:30pm – 4:30pm “ART IS THERE TO REMIND US THAT WE CAN THINK FOR OURSELVES.” Melanie Rothschild will talk about her work, her often unconventional perspective on art and her deep respect for the serious role of mistakes in the creative process. She’ll discuss how she came to the discipline of pouring paint and the poetry she sees in artists making the most of their available resources, whatever they may be. Included in the presentation will be an excerpt from her 2011 documentary, MISTAKE. For more than two decades, Rothschild’s functional pieces have been sold in galleries and museum stores across the U.S. in the 2007, she she began the Paint and Air series, which was born from a mistake and heralded a major shift in her work, ultimately resulting in her earning a graduate degree in the Study of Creativity from Buffalo State College.
