Chair of Board of Managers Named City Year’s Idealist of the Year

On May 17, Arthur R. Block, chair of Moore’s Board of Managers and Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Comcast Corporation, was honored with the 2012 Idealist of the Year Award at City Year Greater Philadelphia’s annual tribute dinner held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

City Year is an education-focused, non-profit organization founded in 1988 that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. The Idealist of the Year Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Philadelphia community. Block has been co-chair of City Year’s board for several years.…

Interior Design Student Wins First Marian Locks Award

Christine Ferri, an interior design major from Seven Fields, PA received the first Marian Locks Senior Award at Moore College of Art & Design’s 164th commencement on Sunday, May 13.

The Locks Family Foundation gave $100,000 to Moore to endow the $4,000 award for a graduating senior as she launches her career in art and design. Marian Locks (1914-2010) founded one of the first galleries in Philadelphia devoted exclusively to contemporary art.

The Marian Locks Award may be used to supplement income, enable post baccalaureate internships or service, facilitate postgraduate travel and research or help support graduate study.

164th Commencement Held on May 13

Moore's 164th commencement was held on Sunday, May 13, 2012 under a large tent in Aviator Park.

This year, 98 undergraduates received their Bachelor’s degrees in Art Education, Art History, Curatorial Studies, Fashion Studies, Fine Arts 2D, Fine Arts 3D, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography & Digital Arts and Textile Design.

Thirteen students earned their Post-Baccalaureate degree in Art Education from Moore.

The graduates joined members of the Moore staff, faculty and Board of Managers for a procession beginning at Moore and ending in Aviator Park, across from the college.

Spring Fashion Show 2012 "Breaks Away"

On May 12, Moore fashion design seniors presented their collections at the Spring Fashion Show 2012 in a tent in Aviator Park.

The fashion show featured innovative collections and designs by seniors, junior and sophomore students of Moore’s acclaimed fashion design department. The theme of the senior eveningwear collection was Breaking Away. A double entendre, Breaking Away drew inspiration from the ocean and colors of the water, but also reflected the fact that this is the time for seniors to move on to the next phase of their careers.

Moore Faculty Member Makes Headlines as Sports Cartoonist

Richard Harrington, assistant professor of Illustration at Moore, has joined SportsWeek, the Philadelphia Daily News’  weekly sports publication, as a “Sportoonist,” or cartoonist.

The publication, which prints on Sundays, seeks to cover “this town’s shared passion in a way that goes beyond the field of play.” Harrington’s debut illustration, published on May 6, 2012 (above), chronicles the Philadelphia Phillies and their current batting problems.

“I love sports. I was always better at drawing sports than playing them,” Harrington said. “This is really fun.”

President Fernandez Honored at Reception

On Monday, May 7, about 300 guests attended a reception at Moore College of Art & Design honoring the presidency of Happy Craven Fernandez. Guest speakers included Mayor Michael Nutter; Arthur R. Block, chair of the Board of Managers;  Fran Graham ’66, chair of the Board of Trustees; philanthropist Carole Haas Gravagno; Heather Bryson ’92, president of the Alumnae Association; Marah Carpenter ’12, Student Government president; and Moe Brooker, Penny & Bob Fox Distinguished Professor. Moore Breaks Away with Fashion Show 2012

(Philadelphia, PA) – Moore’s Spring Fashion Show 2012, featuring innovative collections and designs by senior, junior and sophomore students of the College’s acclaimed fashion design department, will take place on Saturday night, May 12 at 8 pm in Aviator Park.

Moore Announces 2012 Commencement Speaker

Moore is pleased to announce that Michelle Ortiz ’00 will be this year’s Commencement speaker. Ortiz has a BFA from Moore College of Art & Design and was a fine arts major. She also holds a Master’s from Rosemont College. Ortiz has designed and created more than 30 large-scale public works both nationally and internationally. She also works with various nonprofit arts organizations in Philadelphia. Moore’s Commencement is Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 2 pm.

Moore Announces 2012 Senior Awards

On Wednesday evening, April 25, students, staff and faculty gathered at Moore for the 2012 Senior Show Awards Ceremony in the Great Hall. The Locks Career Center was able to present over $12,400 in 48 cash and in-kind awards to 39 students, including 10 new Best in Show awards. The ceremony immediately preceded the VIP reception for the 2012 Senior Show: Emerging Artists and Designers. Moore Wins Knight Arts Challenge

PHILADELPHIA (April 23, 2012) – In the summer of 2013, The Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design will create an urban “drive-in” movie theater experience on The Parkway, thanks to support from the  John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The audience need only bring a blanket or lawn chair. The films are free and, in place of the traditional concession stand, Philadelphia food trucks will serve up a variety of street snacks.
