From the traditions of art in history and literature to the economics and politics of contemporary art and design and beyond, liberal arts courses explore ideas and stimulate students to find new sources of inspiration that enrich both their lives and work.

Small classes promote close interaction between the students and faculty, encouraging active participation and promoting progress. The curriculum reflects the expansive interests and expertise of our faculty emphasizing the contributions of artists and women from an international perspective.

The first and second year liberal arts curriculum encourages students to investigate the world of ideas while sharpening their ability to think, write and discuss ideas with critical eyes and clear focus. Art history courses are paired with classes in the writing program during the first year and with world history courses in the second. These classes prepare students to examine the major forces in world cultures, both past and present, which shape our postmodern world.

Junior- and senior-level electives challenge students to pursue their special interests—from creative writing, film and the economics of starting a small business, to the philosophies and politics of art production in the postmodern world. These electives examine various aspects of art, culture and history in-depth. They confront real-life problems in contemporary culture and invite students to consider options and issues that artists in general, and women especially, may encounter as they prepare to continue their education or situate themselves in a competitive marketplace.
