Apr 27, 2008
Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter was the Commencement Speaker at Moore College of Art & Design's 2008 Graduation Ceremony on Monday, May 19, 10 am - noon, at The Academy of Music, Philadelphia.
Mayor Michael A. Nutter, a lifetime Philadelphian with an accomplished career of public service, business and financial administration, is deeply committed to the arts. In March, under his leadership, more than 200 arts and cultural organizations in Philadelphia were awarded grants totaling $2.1 million through the city's Cultural Fund-among them The Galleries at Moore. In his proposed budget for fiscal year 2009, Mayor Nutter has doubled Philadelphia Cultural Fund allocations to $4.2 million.
"Protecting and supporting Philadelphia's vibrant arts and culture community is a valuable part of our City's renewed plan for economic and neighborhood development," says Mayor Nutter.
The Mayor is also committed to re-opening the Office of Arts and Cultural in fiscal year 2008. Mayor Nutter recently appointed Moore's Basics Chair, Moe Brooker, as chair of Philadelphia's Art Commission, the City's charter-mandated design review board for architecture and art.
Along with Mayor Nutter, Roberta Fallon and Libby Rosof, artists and writers who created the internationally acclaimed Artblog, received honorary Doctorates of Fine Arts at the ceremony. In January 2008 they launched "A Kiss for Mayor Nutter" campaign inviting artists and art lovers post images to show the new Mayor how artists love the city and support his promise to reinstate the Office of Arts and Culture.
