Nov 01, 2007
In May, 2007 CBS 3, The CW Philly 57 and Moore College of Art & Design announced a partnership to provide student exhibition space at the TV station's new HD Broadcast Center at 1555 Hamilton Street in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia.
Artwork by Moore Bachelor of Fine Arts students is currently displayed year-round in six highly visible exhibition spaces within the stations' 100,000 plus square foot headquarters. Designed by Hillier Architecture, the CBS 3/CW Philly 57 offices and studios include two television studios, each with its own control room to allow for simultaneous broadcasts; a state-of-the-art Master Control room; an Operations Center capable of receiving hundreds of satellite feeds each day, and a sixth-floor weather deck for live outdoor weather reports. The Broadcast Center also features community space for public meetings.
CBS 3 and The CW Philly 57 Vice President and Station Manager Robin Magyar worked with Moore College of Art & Design to create the student exhibit space. "As part of our commitment to stay in the City, we wanted to include artwork by students from local arts schools, " Magyar said. "It seemed especially fitting for such a creative industry as television, that we provide our staff with a unique and artistic environment."
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to exhibit their work," said Happy Fernandez, President of Moore College of Art & Design. "This kind of visibility for students is key in Moore's mission to educate women for careers in the visual arts. The work exhibited will represent the range of Moore's ten BFA majors including fine arts, fashion, textile design, illustration and others."
Located on the Avenue of the Arts North, CBS 3 and The CW Philly 57 are virtually within walking distance of seven colleges and universities offering degrees in art and design. In addition to Moore College of Art & Design, they include Drexel University, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia University and Tyler School of Art.
Founded in Philadelphia in 1848 as the first and only women visual arts college in the nation, Moore College of Art & Design has a number of firsts to its credit. Formerly called Philadelphia School of Design for Women, Moore was the first art school to emphasize commercial design in its curriculum.
The inaugural exhibition at CBS 3 / CW Philly 57 includes work by eight Moore students from Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. A slide slideshow featuring the artwork can be seen at CBS 3 website. The student work will rotate on a nine to twelve month schedule.
