Ideas and imagination come to life through the graphic representations of illustrators. The Illustration Department prepares students for professional careers through a challenging curriculum that develops concepts and skills required in advertising, institutional, sequential, editorial, and book illustration.

A competent illustrator is foremost a knowledgeable artist. The Illustration Department fosters talent and creativity while instructing students in a comprehensive range of illustration-based courses as well as life drawing and painting.

With an emphasis on experiencing the many facets of the field, the Illustration Department hosts a variety of guest illustrators, art directors and artists’ representatives to network with students, serve as critics, lecture and demonstrate their own work.

As an Educator Member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City, the Department takes an annual trip to Society’s Museum of American Illustration, which promotes the art of illustration through exhibitions, lectures and educational programs.

Between junior and senior years, students gain additional and vital professional experience fulfilling a required summer internship.

Digital technology is a vital component of the Illustration Department. Industry-standard hardware and software are regularly updated. The Illustration Department has a digital camera, graphic tablets, and Bryce and Procreate Painter software.

Computer classrooms and labs contain MAC G4s installed with the latest versions of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Macromedia Director, Dreamweaver, Quark Xpress, Fireworks, and Flash, as well as Microsoft Word and Power Point. All computer labs have Internet access, CD-ROMs, Zip drives, Agfa flatbed scanners, slide scanners and color laser printers. The College also has one logging station and two video editing stations with MAC G4s installed with OS 10.2, Adobe Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro V.
