Philadelphia

City as a Campus

Because Philadelphia is one of the nation’s great cultural centers, the city’s arts resources are diverse and easily accessible. Moore College students live, study and create in this city bursting with inspiration.

Set on the magnificent Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Moore is surrounded by the city’s arts and cultural riches. Within a few minutes walk along the scenic Parkway are the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and our immediate neighbors, the Franklin Institute and the Academy of Natural Sciences.

Soon to be added are a stunning new Calder Museum and a new home for the incomparable Barnes Foundation impressionist collection.

Art and art galleries can be found throughout Philadelphia and its suburbs, but one neighborhood in particular has become the epicenter of the region’s artistic community. Called “Old City,” and located just north of Independence National Historical Park, the area has grown into an exciting new arts district that scores of galleries, furniture and lighting shops, theaters and restaurants call home. What’s more, it’s just a mile from Moore’s campus.

Old City’s signature event is called “First Friday.”

Held on the first Friday of each month, the galleries, shops and theaters in Old City showcase the visual and performing arts, from traditional to contemporary to experimental, drawing a city and suburban crowds to its quaint streets.

Further enlivening the cultural scene are abundant public art installations and murals, the grand performance spaces on the Avenue of the Arts, and annual events such as the Fringe Festival, the Furniture and Furnishings Show, and the Philadelphia Flower Show, by all accounts, the world’s best.

Greater Philadelphia also has dozens of ethnically diverse neighborhoods, great shopping and dining, and more than 80 colleges and universities.

Nearby Fairmount Park is ideal for walking, biking, rollerblading or just watching rowers from the banks of the Schuylkill River. Philadelphia's region-wide public transportation system includes numerous safe and convenient buses, subways, trains and trolleys. For more information:www.septa.com

Moore College encourages students to explore and enjoy the resources and events in Philadelphia, and helps make them available by offering a range of free or discounted tickets to plays, music and dance performances, sporting events, craft shows, and films.
