The July issue of Town and Country magazine introduces readers to The Art Shop at Moore. The issue devoted to Philanthropy, highlights the Shop's unique mission to offer students and alumnae a retail venue while helping to "give back" a percentage to the College.
The Art Shop directly delivers on the College''s mission to educate women for careers in art and design. Having just celebrated its 160th Anniversary, Moore College of Art & Design is the first and only visual arts college for women in the nation. With appoximately 85% of all undergraduate students at Moore receiving some kind of scholarship assistance, procedes from The Art Shop sales help to offset the cost of operations and provide students with work study opportunities. Students sell work to make additional money during the school year. It is a "real world" experience few design students get while in school.
Collectors have access to the work of emerging artists and designers. It is a great incubator for alumnae to launch new products and designs as well. The Bucklette, an accessory designed to hold lipstick, ID and cash, by Sandy Alexander '92 is and example of a product that The Art Shop has helped market. The article written by Caroline Tiger, also mentions the 160th commemorative silk anniversary scarf designed by Nicole Pelino '09, garden sculpture by Sandy Webberking '97 and the silver woven jewelry of Hala Al-Shawaf '03.
