160th Anniversary

MOORE AT 160

Moore began in 1848 as the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, when philanthropist Sarah Peter founded the school “to educate women in the art of design and provide meaningful opportunities for employment.” The first students worked in the textile, wallpaper and other factories of Philadelphia's industrial boom. The school's influence on early American art and design was also realized by members of The Philadelphia Ten and The Red Rose Girls. This influence continues today through Moore's BFA program for women and graduate programs for men and women, The Galleries at Moore, the Young Artists Workshop for boys and girls and a full range of continuing education programs.

Alumnae Footsteps

An opening reception on January 29 is open to the public. An alumnae reception will be held March 13.

For the exhibition, each alumnae artists has created a work no larger than 24 in x 24 in. Using the inspiration of the paths each has taken or followed to be the artist and designer they are today.

Moore Footsteps
In honor of the 160th Anniversary of Moore College of Art & Design, alumnae are celebrating on a large scale. This summer, fourteen alumnae were commissioned to decorate twelve six-foot boots to mark the pathways and accomplishments made by School's gutsy graduates over 16 decades. The boots are as varied as the artists and designers who created them. Representing seven different disciplines and generations, the artists' boots are on view city-wide through May 2009. The indoor sculptures can be seen in such places as City Hall, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Free Library and The Four Seasons Hotel.
Moore Footsteps is sponsored by Fran Graham '66 and Bill Graham. Read More
