“The shoe that fits one pinches another” Carl Gustav Jung 2008
Porcelain, rice paper, ink, Barbie shoes
“Our only hope for the redemption of woman from the thralldom of dress lies in the belief that her hitherto limited sphere of activities has been so insufficient for her intellectual occupations that she has been forced to expend her thoughts in decorating her person, instead of enlarging her mind.” Mercy B. Jackson
“Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.” Alice Paul’s therapist
3. Cathey White ’96
City Hall
Boot Sponsor: Frances and Bayard Storey
Growth “Process” 2008
Spray paint and mixed media
“This work is about my growth as an artist beginning as a student at Moore. To describe or represent this idea of growth, I have used botanical and natural elements —roots, stems and leaves — as metaphors for this connectedness. The work also contains a play of opposites: gritty yet beautiful, abstract yet realistic — contradictions much like my personal journey.”
4. Dee Collins ’93
Moore College of Art & Design
Wilson Gallery, Wilson Hall
20th & The Parkway, Philadelphia
Boot Sponsor: Carole Haas Gravagno
Connections 2008
Reduction prints, computer printed text, image and paintings on Japanese paper, images on lazertran, acrylic paint
“My boot reflects Moore’s role in challenging, enriching and changing my life forever through education, community, and art. Using printmaking, photography and painting, I introduce images and text that represent the places, people and ideas that have inspired me as a person and as an artist. All of these pieces, although they exist independently, are essential to who I am today.”
5. Rochelle Levy ’79
Moore College of Art & Design
Boot Sponsor: Fox Rothschild
Chainlinks 2008
Paint, aluminum chains, mirrors
“We all walk through life and these movements are reflected in our footsteps. These chains connect us all. They support our movements from past to future and then join in our dreams. The mirrors reflect where we’ve been, where we are and where we are going.”
6. Karen Daroff ’70
Daroff Design, 2121 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA
Boot Sponsor: Comcast Family of Companies
Step into the Future 2008
Silver metallic and gloss black lacquer, blue LED lighting, stainless steel studs
“Since graduating from Moore to begin my career as an interior designer, I have constantly strived for design excellence and going beyond the predictable. The color palette for my boot reflects my preference to live simply. The 'Wow' factor emblematic of my company’s entertainment projects is highlighted by 'green design' technology with sparkling low-energy LED lights. My goal is to celebrate my professional design philosophy and to delight and inspire young designers to reach beyond the expected and 'step into the future.”
7. e Bond ’96

18th & Cherry Streets, Philadelphia
Boot Sponsor: Blank Rome LLP
noted 2008
Mixed media
“This boot is an open letter to my students and other artists to remind and urge them to stay firm and keep making what they make. It is also a letter of thanks to the women who inspired and guided me. This sculpture is a place to keep and share inspirational thoughts collected from clippings, books, sketchbooks, advice, criticism and other documents that have fostered my growth as an artist.”
8. Longina Rossi ’70
Moore College of Art & Design
Wilson Gallery, Wilson Hall

Boot Sponsor: Four Seasons Hotel
Dancing with Gaia 2008
Discharged velvet
“I am a fiber artist. With fabric and thread, design, color, texture and form, I tell stories about the possibility of beauty, encouraging the viewer to imagine something out of the realm of his/her own reality, creating the opportunity to dream about beautiful things. My boot sculpture is covered in velvet with a discharged design in leafy spirals — symbolic of a journey inward. I like the idea of the boot...it’s feminine, soft and sexy (like velvet)...and yet evokes a strong and indomitable spirit!”
9. Jane Walentas ’66
Moore College of Art & Design — Wilson Gallery
20th & The Parkway
Step By Step: 1966 to Present 2008
Sepia toned photos printed on ink-jet printer, acrylic paint, aluminum leaf over metal grommets, upholstery tacks, satin ribbon
“This boot documents the amazing journey of my life and my work as an artist. Using scanning, resizing, re-coloring techniques, the collage layer is made of images of my work as a fine artist and as a designer. Each image recalls a time, a place, a joy or a struggle, a teacher, a colleague, a show, a client, a boss, an award, or an event. This sculpture has the look and feel of an old time-worn boot, one that has traveled an interesting, creative and joyful life.”
10. Gail Gaines ’89
The Free Library of Philadelphia — 2nd Floor
Logan Square
Boot Sponsor: PNC Bank
Every Little Detail 2008
Fabric and trim decoupage, machine and hand embroidery
“The soulful spirit of the slave quilts and the unique Victorian crazy quilts illustrate the strength and depth of women’s imagination and ingenuity in the face of great hardships. Every Little Detail was inspired by those labors of love. This piece is a record of precious childhood memories and a history of people, places, fabrics and events that have influenced and guided my steps as an artist.”
11. Heather Bryson ’92
B Square Gallery, 614 S. 9th Street, Philadelphia, PA
Boot Sponsor: The Philadelphia Inquirer
Life immense, in passion, pulse and power 2008
Rust-Oleum paint, dye on silk
“My fascination with these characters has been evolving over the years and is a reflection of what is going on around me. The characters develop and remain in the fluff of my pockets and continue to forge new inspiration for my creative path.”
12. Janell Wysock ’04
Moore College of Art & Design
Boot Sponsor: Charming Shoppes, Inc.
Begin with One Step 2008
Glued, draped and sewn materials
“As I move forward as an artist, I am lured and comforted by both machine-knitted and woven fabrics. Using them along with scrap yarns and audiocassette tapes, I am able to create something beautiful from unexpected materials and to communicate the importance of recycling. My knowledge and inspiration for this project were borne from experiences in the Textile Department at Moore College of Art & Design.”
