The Galleries at Moore

ABOUT THE GALLERIES AT MOORE:

With gallery with spaces throughout the ground floor Moore’s campus and beyond, the Galleries offer visitors and students insights and new perspectives into the work of established and emerging regional, national, and international contemporary artists and designers, including a constantly rotating schedule of exhibitions, both on-campus and off, featuring works by Moore students, faculty and alumnae. Exhibitions are open to the public, free of charge.

EXHIBITION SPACES:

Since founding its first contemporary art venue in 1968, Moore College of Art & Design has, over time, evolved and expanded its exhibition spaces to maintain its reputation as an innovative leader in Philadelphia’s cultural community while simultaneously serving as an educational resource to students, faculty, residents and visitors.

THE GOLDIE PALEY GALLERY, established in 1983 presents solo and group exhibitions by emerging and established national and international artists. Past exhibitions include the first U.S. presentations of internationally-renowned artists: Artur Barrio, VALIE EXPORT, Terry Fox, Raymond Hains, Jean-Frédéric Schnyder, and Roman Singer. Founded in 1987, the LEVY GALLERY FOR THE ARTS IN PHILADELPHIA highlights the work of area artists and arts organizations with a focus on collaboration and experimentation. The new WINDOW ON RACE features site-specific installations. Serving the only art and design college for women in the US, the Galleries have featured solo exhibitions of significant women artists and designers including: Jo Baer, Janet Biggs, Dara Birnbaum, Hanne Darboven, Jay DeFeo, Marlene Dumas, Barbara Ess, Viola Frey, Marisol, Jacqueline Matisse, Alice Neel, Adrian Piper, and Faith Ringgold. Major group exhibitions featuring women artists include: Guerrilla Girls Talk Back: A Retrospective: 1985-1991; The Philadelphia Ten: A Women’s Artist Group 1917-1945; Painted Faces: Mary Cassatt, Karen Kilimnick, Alice Neel; Gloria: Another Look at Feminist Art of the 1970s; Women to Watch: Photography in Philadelphia; and IN REPOSE: Images of Women by Women.

In addition to annual alumnae and student exhibitions, and triennial faculty exhibitions, The Galleries feature exhibitions of student, faculty and alumnae work in the Wilson and Graham Galleries as well as recent projects and site-specific installations by Moore students on The Philadelphia Wall and in the Diamond Window Galleries. Work by the Moore Community is also exhibited in public exhibition spaces at off-campus locations including the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and CBS 3 Studios. The Widener Memorial Foundation Gallery also highlights work by the Moore community as well as special exhibitions presented in collaboration with area not-for-profit arts and community organizations such as MANNA, Center for Emerging Visual Artists and the Jewish Community Relations Council. The Moore College Sculpture Park, located across from the College entrance in Aviator Park, features installations of major public sculptures. Under the auspices of Student Government, the Student–Run Gallery, located on the fourth floor connector between Sarah Peter and Wilson Halls, features thematic exhibitions of student work.
