Our newest major, and the only undergraduate program of its kind in the
country, curatorial studies combines intensive examination of contemporary
curatorial practice with in-depth studies in art history and substantial
studio work.
This program encourages students to gain knowledge of both the theoretical
constructs and practical applications involved in conceptualizing,
generating and creating exhibitions, collections and their documentation.
Through analysis of the traditions of art in history and literature, and
the discussion of the economics and politics of contemporary art, craft and
design, students engage with a range of contemporary curatorial issues
while studying with professionals who are working actively in the field. In
addition, each student will participate first-hand in curatorial operations
through a professional internship.
Students will become acquainted with the techniques and processes involved
in creating works of art by developing significant technical proficiency in
at least one studio area through a required studio minor. Complementing the
studio minor, open studio electives allow students to pursue their other
artistic interests.
The BFA in Curatorial Studies provides students with the flexibility to
pursue careers in museums, public and private galleries, historical and
cultural institutions and more. Students seeking further training upon
graduation will have the skills and knowledge necessary to continue their
studies at the MA or PhD level in curatorial studies, museum management and
conservation.
