Fashion Courses

From basic sewing to high fashion, from researching and developing design concepts to choosing the right fabrics for an entire collection, Moore’s Continuing Education Program in Fashion covers all the major aspects of this exciting and important field. Instruction on the fundamentals of fashion design is complemented with vital insights into the fashion industry and market trends.

Basic Sewing
Designed for the novice sewer, this course introduces basic sewing skills necessary to create a simple garment. Emphasis is placed on machine and hand sewing techniques and understanding the sequence of producing a garment. Learn to sew simple seams, hems, pockets, facings and closings.

Couture Techniques
Originally meaning "fine sewing," couture today is synonymous with high fashion designed with luxury fabrics and exquisite detailing. Made in limited numbers, couture garments are valued in the thousands of dollars. In this class students discuss techniques of developing haute couture collection and choose a haute couture designer to study. Students also create original haute couture designs, color stories, textile stories and presentation boards.

Basic Hat-Making
Focusing on the basic construction of hats, students will also have the opportunity to develop more elaborate designs and trimming techniques. Steaming and forming skills as will as fine handwork are stressed.

Introduction to the Fashion Industry
A brief history and overview of the garment industry is covered with an emphasis on the technical designer’s responsibilities and required skills today. Additional focus is spent on product development for a target market and developing research and development skills. Fashion drawing and design principles will be explored as well as new fashion terminology.

Global Fashion Marketing
Global Fashion Marketing provides an introduction to the international business of fashion. Explore domestic and foreign markets, the impact of technology, manufacturing, licensing on each level of fashion and global sourcing as it applies to this growing industry.

Construction and Flat Patternmaking
This course provides an introduction to the construction of and the order in which garments are made—the key to understanding the concept of technical design. Attention to design details will help prepare students for the exactness of technical drawing. Within the class, students’ sewing skills will advance. A sloper will be used in the creation of new designs.

*Prerequisite: Basic sewing experience

CADI for Patternmaking
Learn to use the digitizer to enter and grade patterns on the computer. Exercises that address learning dart manipulation, slashing and spreading also will be provided. Final patterns will incorporate the use of a plotter and be printed. The Lectra/Modaris system of computer patternmaking will be taught in a PC computer lab.

Technical Drawing and Specifications
Learn to draw freehand from dress forms and models, and benefit from a template to deliberately draw garments in proportion. Attend to design details and render and measure design specs consistent with fashion industry standards. From knowledge gained in Construction and Flat Patternmaking, students will learn to draw flats and be introduced to machine knitting.

*Prerequisite: Construction and Flat Patternmaking

Technical Fashion Design
Learn to research and develop design concepts, derived from your designs and specs, for a specific targeted market. Fashion trends developed by head designers and the use and assortment of fabrics are introduced. Incorporating templates of fashion figures, chart a well-merchandised assemblage, including concept boards, with original designs and fabric swatches.

*Prerequisite: Construction and Flat Patternmaking & Technical Drawing and Specifications.

Photoshop for Fashion
An introduction to digital imagery using Adobe Photoshop, one of the most widely used software programs in the industry. Gain experience in scanning, editing and composing fashion images while you explore varying color and patterns to instantly view countless variations and results.

*Prerequisite: Basic computer skills

Illustrator for Fashion
An additional software program, Adobe Illustrator, adds to your knowledge of Photoshop and will further your range and options in fashion on the computer. Develop flat sketch rendering skills for use with technical drawings and design applications.

*Prerequisite: Photoshop for Fashion & Technical Drawing and Specifications

Handbag Design
Design and create unique handbags with materials ranging from vintage fabrics to modern leathers, pre-fabricated handles and interesting trims. Students will choose up to three handbag styles to make and will learn how to conceptualize, design, sketch, draft patterns and construct bags using basic machine and/or hand sewing. Sources for fabric and trim materials, helpful sewing hints and techniques will be covered.

Note: Basic knowledge of machine or hand sewing is helpful but not necessary. The instructor will provide tutorials for sewing and all skills involved in this course.
