Internship Fellowship Initiative
Moore is already set apart from its peers because of the required internship in ALL majors, which generally occurs between the junior and senior year. In order to help relieve the financial burden of internships and to underscore Moore’s commitment to educating women for careers in the visual arts, the College has initiated new Internship Fellowships to support each junior during her 240-hour required internship, beginning with this year’s junior class in summer 2010.
Internships connect students with employers, give students a mentor and real-world experience, and help students develop a network of contacts. 25% of Moore students work fulltime in addition to carrying a full class load. Since some internships are unpaid, the internship requirement can be an added financial strain.
“This initiative largely builds upon the success of this summer’s Knight Internship Fellowships, funded through a one-time grant from the Knight Foundation,” says Moore President Happy Fernandez. “Internships can also meet the needs of nonprofits, providing cost-effective, talented workers who contribute to the “creative economy,” of particular value in this time when funding for Philadelphia’s arts, cultural and nonprofit community is decreasing.”
To prepare Moore graduates to be ready to contribute and succeed in today’s workplace, the required internship, paired with the services offered through the Locks Career Center, gives Moore students every advantage and the tools to apply critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving that they are learning in the classroom to workplace situations.
During summer 2009, thanks to a grant from the Knight Foundation, ten students had very fulfilling internships at ten major non-profit institutions in Philadelphia, including places like the Mutter Museum, Design for Social Impact, the Library Company of Philadelphia, Women’s Community Revitalization Project, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. While the Knight Fellowships were limited to internships in non-profits in the Philadelphia region, the new Internship Fellowships will apply to any internship anywhere in the world.
