Residence Halls
Residence life at Moore provides a convenient and collaborative environment where students from diverse majors, backgrounds and cultures can learn from one another and support each other as they advance through their college years. At Moore, we guarantee housing to our students for the entirety of their undergraduate education
We offer on-campus housing in three residence halls: Rittenhouse Hall, Sartain Hall, and Louise Stahl Residence Hall (a.k.a. Stahl Hall).
Rittenhouse Hall
Rittenhouse Hall is the newest addition to our selection of student housing options—located at 1831 Chestnut Street and just seven minutes' walk to campus, the building features luxury apartment style one- two- and three-bedroom units primarily for juniors and seniors.
Sartain Hall
Sartain Hall, located at 2039 Cherry Street, is a block away from Moore's main buildings and contains single, double and quadruple rooms, with community-style bathroom facilities. Students can use the lounge on the first floor, which has a pool table and cable television.
Stahl Hall
Stahl Hall is adjacent and connected to Moore's campus at 1916 Race Street and houses students in suites of two bedrooms with newly renovated bathrooms (with a few triple occupancy rooms). The student lounge is located in the penthouse above the 5th floor, which can be accessed by taking the elevator in Stahl Hall to the 5th floor and walking up the remaining flight of stairs. Lounge facilities include a kitchenette, televisions with cable hookup and study stations.
Resident Assistants and Resident Directors can be found in both halls.
These experienced Moore students are knowledgeable about the College and its resources. They are trained to help with students' day-to-day concerns, manage emergencies and serve as links to the Student Affairs staff.
On-campus housing lasts for the entire academic year and charges are payable in advance by the semester. All residence halls have 24-hour security coverage and may be accessed by students 24 hours a day when the halls are open.
Rittenhouse Hall
Located in the heart of Philadelphia at 1831 Chestnut Street, Rittenhouse Hall is just a seven-minute walk to campus and features fully-furnished apartments with 24/7 security.

Two-year Residency Policy
As a new full-time undergraduate student, Moore requires you to live in our residence halls for your first two years. We understand this isn’t always possible for all students and will work with you to make sure you’re comfortable with your housing choice as a first-year student. If your permanent address is located in one of the identified surrounding counties, you are eligible to apply for a housing exemption, see below for more information.
The residence halls at Moore College of Art & Design provide a holistic experience for students to be connected to one another, have easy access to studios throughout the day/evening, and foster relationships and collaborations that build lifetime skills with your artistic community of fellow residents. In response to our students’ needs, Moore guarantees housing availability for all four years for undergraduate students.
As a residential college, we provide personal support to students through:
- Social interactions
- Robust programming
- Art-making
- Celebratory events
- Leadership opportunities to provide a greater sense of belonging.
Living on campus has been shown to help students become more connected to each other and the College, and successfully navigate the academic rigors and social experiences unique to college life. Students who live at Moore are 8% more likely to graduate than those students living off campus. Therefore, full-time undergraduate students are required to reside in College-operated housing for their first two years at Moore College of Art and Design unless approved by the Housing Review Committee after completing the Residence Requirement Exemption Form. Students will be eligible for commuter status if their permanent address, as stated in their official College Record, is within a 30-mile radius of the College.
Housing Exemptions
We want you to feel supported and hope you will consider living on campus to further embed yourself in the Moore experience! But if you still don't think you can make it work, housing exemptions are approved for the following reasons:
- Commuter Status – Students living with a college-listed parent or legal guardian whose permanent address is located in any of these surrounding counties:
- PA: Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties
- NJ: Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties
- DE: New Castle county
- Age Requirement – Students who are age 22 and over
- Transfer Students – Students matriculating to Moore as a junior/senior
- Married or Domestic Partnership – Students who are legally married or in a recognized domestic partnership
Students who qualify for any of these reasons may request an exemption by contacting our Director of Residence Life & Housing, Rose Apostolakis at rapostolakis@moore.edu. Requests for an exemption must be received at time of deposit for potential release from fall semester housing. Requests received after this deadline may still be reviewed in extraordinary circumstances, don’t hesitate to reach out to Rose if you need more time.
Res Life FAQ
Moore College Housing and Residence Life
Moore's three residence halls operate under a gender-affirming, welcoming, and inclusive housing model.
- Housing assignments are placed and reviewed individually by the Director of Residence Life & Housing rather than assigned through an automated process
- Students will have opportunities to indicate housing preferences that align with sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or other factors important to their residential experience
- Students will (continue to) complete a housing application that includes questions about living preferences, housing needs, and roommate compatibility to make decisions that best align for the success of students
- Information shared through the housing application process is handled discreetly and used only to support housing placements and student wellbeing
- Students who have questions or concerns about their housing experience are encouraged to connect directly with Rose Apostolakis, Director of Residence Life & Housing at rapostolakis@moore.edu
